| Anjou literally
sits on layers of history: fossils from Doue la Fontaine; unexplained
Dolmens from 6000-2000 B.C.; Roman ruins; Eleaonor of Acquitaine
and the Abbey of Fontevraud; Troglodyte caves; medieval fortresses; Renaissance
chateaux; and the Vendeen uprising.
The history of
L’Abbaye itself is significant and evolving in our understanding.
The Abbey was founded in the 1100's and is in fact cited a
Papal Bull in 1147; however, during the
1400's errors in orthodoxy were made by two of the Abbesses
resulting in the transformation of the L’Abbaye into
a farm. The “new” Abbey built at the beginning
of the 1600's is a much grander affair including a bakery,
enormous fireplaces and monks cells. The chapel stopped giving
services in 1765 and was destroyed during the French Revolution.
